Guy’s Pitchie! Guy Ritchie opens Shaftesbury’s £500k 3G football pitch

0

Shaftesbury Town Council were pleased to announce Guy Ritchie as a last-minute special guest at the grand opening of the new £500k 3G football pitch last night. Hundreds of parents, football club members and town supporters showed up to watch the ribbon cutting and to celebrate the official opening of the new all-weather pitch.

The new pitch was a joint project between the town council and Shaftesbury Football Club, and creates provision for children’s football in the town for the first time, making it more accessible for the whole community. Saturday morning football is now available within walking distance of Shaftesbury town centre for over 150 children.

Guy Ritchie joked with the kids as he cut the ribbon, encouraging them that “If football doesn’t work out for you, that’s okay. You can turn into movie stars!”

Film director and local brewery owner Guy Ritchie has lived in Berwick St John, just outside Shaftesbury, since 2001 and is open about his love for the area.

As the hundreds of supporters and sponsors looked on, Ritchie’s opening speech was short, friendly and to the point as he approached the ceremonial ribbon: “It’s a great looking pitch! Thanks very much – where are the scissors?!”

Councillor Piers Brown has been a driving force behind the project, and was visibly moved as he watched the town’s youngsters play on the new pitch
“This. This is what we’ve all been working so hard for. No more Saturday mornings for parents having to find the time and resources to trek the kids out to Guy’s Marsh – now they can simply walk into town to play.”

The pitch has been self-funded, and much of the loan will be paid off by the two new long-stay car park on, and adjacent to, the site in the middle of the town. This will both help the lack of parking in the town, and also support the retail businesses.

The pitch is available to hire by anyone, and will become a town resource for more than just footballers. There have already been a lot of enquiries to rent so get in quickly before it’s fully booked!

CRESS Open Garden fundraising event

0

The CRESS Garden Open is being held this year over the weekend of 11th – 12th September, each afternoon between 2.00-5.00pm at Knighton Manor, Broad Chalke.

Visitors pay a voluntary contribution to enjoy afternoon tea in the beautiful setting of Knighton Manor, including the opportunity to walk around the cutting flower gardens and the chance to browse various local craft stalls including art, painting, wood crafts, glassware, handmade jewellery, etc.

All donations made will raise valuable funds to support the work that CRESS does to improve the health and wellbeing of the South Sudanese refugees living in northern Uganda.

This year CRESS is specifically looking to raise funds towards the purchase of a 4×4 vehicle, costing ca £20,000, so that CRESS health support workers and fully trained Children’s Accelerated Trauma Training (CATT) counsellors can provide the range of clinical services to refugees living in the different refugee camps across northern Uganda. Without a 4×4 vehicle it is impossible to travel on the uneven and often deeply rutted roads to deliver necessary medicines and supplies to those in need.  For example, CRESS supplies antenatal classes and Mama Kits to improve the birth outcomes for pregnant mothers.

To find out more about how Cress supports the South Sudanese refugees to become more self-sufficient, please visit our website: https://cressuk.org/

We are delighted to announce that NFU Mutual Wessex is supporting the CRESS open garden fundraising event. After a cautious but optimistic return to events – we’re pleased to tell you that the Dorset Food & Arts Festival Market-lite is BACK, this Saturday 7th August from 10-4.

Join us at The Great Field, Peverell Avenue, Poundbury.
Shopping in the fresh air – supporting local artisans and producers. Its a winning combination!

The Festival Market is FREE.

Plenty of parking nearby and its on the 10 & 10A bus route.

We shifted the festival location to the nearby Great Field to give us more space to operate safely. But look forward to returning to our natural home in Queen Mother Square next year!

The festival market will look and feel a bit different this year, as we have been advised to scale down, so there won’t be the usual cookery demonstrations or live music programme, but we’re hoping to have some ‘gentle’ busking to give the pop up shopping experience a bit of atmosphere.

Head over to the Dorset Food & Arts Festival -lite Facebook page https://lnkd.in/eZrMcFTg
