Local legends you probably don’t know, affordable housing, and the bee-fly

0

Jenny and Terry, the BV podcast team, have three exclusive interviews for you this week. Jenny chatted local history with Roger Guttridge, Terry discussed affordable housing developments and wildlife writer Jane Adams is back talking to Jenny! Just click the play button below to listen.

Never miss an episode – if you’re not already subscribed to the BV, you can sign up here and receive a notification of each new podcast (just three a month) straight to your inbox! Or you can catch up on all previous episodes right here.

  • Roger Guttridge recalls three local legends: a minister who upset early women’s libbers, Marnhull’s bull-baiting habit and the legendary toad doctor of Pulham
  • Planning permission was awarded to the Dorset-headquartered AJC Group for a collection of 13 open market homes and eight affordable dwellings (40 per cent) in Hazelbury Bryan. However, the company has an ambition to change the face of social housing, and AJC Group worked with developers Abri to provide 100 per cent affordable housing across the scheme. David Cracklen, director of AJC Group, spoke to Terry about the development.
  • Wildlife writer Jane Adams is looking forward to her own personal sign of spring – what she says is her Mary Quant of the insect world, the bee-fly. Jane also has a book out this month! Nature’s Wonders: Moments That Mark The Seasons, is published in conjunction with National Trust. You can see the BV review in Book Corner on the website , and Jenny chats to Jane about the book.

Safer Internet Day at Charlton Horethorne Primary School

0

Pupils from Charlton Horethorne Primary have been busy this week with a variety of activities for Safer Internet Day. The children produced a video which was chosen from hundreds of entries across the country to be featured in Childnet’s live broadcast from BT Tower! You can watch it online here.
The children opened their own ‘internet cafe’ for the day, to talk about the importance of online safety and what to do if they encounter a problem online.
They also made some fantastic internet themed cakes!

Bongos and cow bells at Whitesheet Primary

0

On Thursdays we are very lucky to have Mr Morgan, a specialist music teacher, come and visit us here at Whitesheet Primary for enrichment.
On the first Thursday, we learnt about different types of beats and counts. We decided whether we wanted to stamp, clap, click our fingers or whistle to the beat. After a lot of practice trying to hit the right beat, we created a rhythm with all of us playing something. We accompanied the chorus of Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran (most of us enjoyed the song but we all enjoyed our percussion section!).
On his next visit, Mr Morgan introduced instruments like bongos, shakers, tambourines and cow bells. We really enjoyed playing the different instruments even though it sometimes became very noisy! We were taught about different musical notes and we read the music to play the rhythms together. We are looking forward to what we will learn next.

We’re shortlisted – NMA2023’s Regional Publication of the Year!

0

On the top of winning Digital Magazine of the Year last month – which was a total surprise, as we hadn’t entered anything – we did write an award entry (obviously in our usual highly-organised style; we slid it in under the wire at five minutes to midnight on deadline day …) for a national industry award.

This afternoon we casually went to see if the shortlist is out, as we’ve not heard anything, and saw it had actually already been published. Unsurprised that we’d not been notified about it, as we obviously weren’t on it, we scrolled down to see who had made the cut for the regional publication of the year in the News and Magazine Awards 2023

That’s…. Us.
The BV.
RIGHT THERE IN THE SHORTLIST!

We’re honestly giddy at the thought.

If you click through and scroll the full shortlist, it contains the likes of the Mail, the Guardian, Times, Telegraph, Grazia, Country Living, Hello Magazine … and now The BV!

*falls on floor*

The shortlist for the regional publication award includes just three titles, and we’re the only purely-digital entry there: we’re up against the Western Mail and the Nottingham Post, BOTH of which are incredibly successful, longstanding local newspapers. But just to be on that list with them! Giddy at the thought, we are!

And listen, we have a one in three chance, right?

Our tiny team works so hard from BV HQ to inform and educate our audience with accuracy and integrity, but also to never lose that little bit of personality which makes us uniquely ‘Dorset’. To be recognised among such talented and respected titles on a national scale is both humbling and inspiring. And of course it’s never just a personal achievement – it can only be a reflection of the entire team’s efforts to deliver impactful and relevant stories and features, as we also try to entertain and uplift.

The winners will be announced at a glitzy ceremony in May in London. We’ll keep you posted…

(Psssst – LOOK! That’s USSSSSS!)

BOOK CORNER by Wayne Winstone, of Winstone’s book shop in Sherborne

I am writing this in February and it still feels cold enough to enjoy a good fire – and of course some good reading matter to keep us happy until the Spring thaw. I have selected two books this month, both are perfect distractions from the cold weather. Wayne

Teller of the Unexpected:
The Life of Roald Dahl
Mathew Dennison (£20)

Given all the press coverage around sensitivity readers “improving the text” of the great children’s writer Roald Dahl I thought readers maybe curious about the man himself.
Roald Dahl was one of the world’s greatest storytellers. He conceived his vocation as one as intrepid as that of any explorer and, in his writing for children, he was able to tap into a child’s viewpoint throughout his life.
He crafted tales that were exotic in scenario, frequently invested with a moral, and filled with vibrant characters that endure in public imagination to the present day. In this brand-new biography, Matthew Dennison re-evaluates the received narrative surrounding Dahl – that of school sporting hero, daredevil pilot, and wartime spy-turned-author – and examines surviving primary resources as well as Dahl’s extensive literary output to tell the story of a man who identified as a rule-breaker, an iconoclast and a romantic, both insider and outsider, hero and child’s friend.

Lessons in Chemistry
by Bonnie Garmus (£10)

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing.
But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Forced to resign, she reluctantly signs on as the host of a cooking show, Supper at Six. But her revolutionary approach to cooking, fuelled by scientific and rational commentary, grabs the attention of a nation. Soon, a legion of overlooked housewives find themselves daring to change the status quo. One molecule at a time
‘The most charming, life-enhancing novel I’ve read in ages. Strongly recommend’ India Knight

(I would also mention that it’s not actually about chemistry! This book was my absolute favourite read of 2022, I strongly recommend it too – Ed)
