In the book\, fourteen and a half year old Meg Taylor faces circumstances far beyond her control that forces her into an environment where her future appears to be mapped out for her. Her new life is not without dangers as the crimes of others impinge on her life. \nIn ‘Shadows’ Meg returns to her birthplace near Sturminster Newton to face the unpleasantness of her past. There\, a dark shadow threatens the loss of her daughter Issy. On returning to Wool\, shadows of past criminal activities places the family in grave danger. \nAuthor’s note: ‘ Meg believed women of that era were locked into societal traditions that demanded a woman’s role was to marry and have children while men were in the workplace. Her hurt\, anger and frustrations will touch you but so will Meg’s stoicism and determination. ‘Me Too’ and the empowerment of women would gain from reading the two books.’ \nBoth books will be available at my book launch of ‘Shadows’ in the Grosvenor Arms\, High Street\, Shaftesbury SP7 8JA on Thursday 23rd June at 10am. \nNote: There is no charge but 10% of sales of the books on the day will go to ukraine-funds@fpc.org.pl who supply books to Ukrainian refugee children and funds to Ukrainian publishers to print books for the exiled Ukrainians in other countries.

SUMMARY:Cranborne Village Church Fete
DESCRIPTION:A traditional village fete will be held in the beautiful gardens of Cranborne Manor\, by kind permission of Lord and Lady Cranborne. There is something for everyone in this delightful and historic Dorset setting. Admission to the amazing gardens is included in the entry fee. \nThere will be traditional stalks\, local produce\, plenty of entertainment such as Maypole dancing\, donkey rides\, Morris dancers and a display of classic cars. There will also be afternoon tea\, a Pimms tent and games for all ages. The event is being held in aid of church funds. If takings allow\, funds will be used to complete the restoration of the Cranborne Village Church clock and tower.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Angelique Richardson and Dr Cath Sawyer discuss their work with the University of Exeter’s Hardy’s Correspondents project.\nThis presentation will introduce the University of Exeter’s Hardy’s Correspondents project\, a digital humanities collaboration with Dorset Museum\, and look at ways in which the letters Hardy wrote\, received\, and respondd to\, shed light on his many-sidedness\, his relationships\, including with other writers such as A.E. Housman\, Siegfried Sassoon and Virginia Woolf\, and his political activism on behalf of the oppressed\, notably his support for women’s suffrage\, world peace\, and animal rights. \nHardy received thousands of letters from all round the world\, including from Australia\, Chile\, China\, India\, Ireland\, Japan\, New Zealand\, Nigeria\, the Philippines\, and Syria\, from actors (e.g. Henry Irving\, Ellen Terry\, Sybil Thorndike\, Irene Vanbrugh)\, artists (von Herkomer\, George Du Maurier\, Helen Paterson)\, musicians (e.g. Elgar\, Vaughan Williams\, Holst)\, fans and other members of the public. The presentation will also illuminate the social practice of letter writing and consider how the form best served Hardy\, even after he acquired a telephone. \nThis talk will be given by Professor Angelique Richardson in discussion with Dr Steph Alder. \nAngelique Richardson is Professor of English and a historian of science at the University of Exeter where she leads the Hardy’s Correspondents Project. Her books include Love and Eugenics in the Late 19th Century\, After Darwin: Animals\, Emotions and the Mind and Women Who Did: Stories by Men and Women\, 1890-1914.\nDr Steph Alder recently completed her PhD on Literary Censorship and the Victorian Novel and is editor of the Thomas Hardy Journal and the Hardy Society Journal.
