DESCRIPTION:At the evenings gets colder\, Oborne Village Hall has invited author Wolfgang Grulke to warm us up with tales of the tropical South Pacific. Wolfgang is well known for his award-wining books on the subject of his fossil collection that has been visited by many locals. Now\, he has turned his attention to the islands of the South Pacific – specifically to the myriad of local cultures and myths\, and how these are celebrated in festivals\, using spectacular adornments – highly valued by tribal art collectors worldwide. \nTheir cultures were shaped over centuries by Chinese\, Arab and Malay traders\, European missionaries and soldiers fighting the ‘War in the Pacific’ on their lands. \n“ As my wife and I explored and dived the remote islands of the South Seas\, we would witness some of the most diverse reefs on the planet\, meet people who spoke more than 1000 languages\, and listen to tribal elders who remembered the taste of human flesh”\, explains Wolfgang\, “Normally\, when we think of jewellery\, we think of gold and precious stones\, but on these islands they do not have access to metals and precious stones\, so they have crafted the most wonderful adornments solely from the natural materials around them. My new book Adorned by Nature tells that story and our adventures in researching the book”.

DESCRIPTION:The first part of tonight’s concert is centred around Vaughan William’s Mass in G minor. It celebrates firstly the 150th anniversary of his birth\, and also the 100th anniversary of the first performance of the Mass.\nThe second part of this concert was prompted by the death earlier this year of Joseph Horovitz at the age of 95. It was composed in 1970\, originally as a children’s cantata but became very popular with adults too\, with its witty and tuneful songs. It’s fun to sing\, fun to listen to and should probably come with an ear worm warning.

For global tourists\, the relative ease and comfort of travel has made once impossible journeys commonplace experience. Through ever-present modes of media and communication\, we have come to be familiar with unknown places and peoples. Yet for all this progress\, our world remains mapped by the physical\, political and cultural boundaries integral to the history of humankind\, and journeys initiated by desperate circumstances remain as everyday as those inspired by the spirit of discovery. \nThis sequence contemplates the concept of physical and philosophical ‘distant lands’ through experiences of adventure\, discovery\, exploration\, migration and displacement. Moving between past and present\, we will explore the tensions between home and away\, conquest and liberty\, unity and otherness in this journey of words and music to the distant lands of our own knowledge and imagination.

DESCRIPTION:A free drop-in session organised by Marnhull Green Teams to enable people to meet installers of PV (solar) panels and batteries. The companies attending like to work on several installations in the same area: it helps them\, and it may well help you\, with potential savings to be had\, financially and/or in time waiting for the work to be done. This is a ‘marketplace’ event\, without presentations; an opportunity to come and chat with the experts. \nMarnhull Green Teams is a village group running various ‘green’ projects and events. In this event we are seeking to encourage PV panel and battery use\, as ways of tackling the energy and environmental crises. Please note that Marnhull Green Teams are only facilitating the event: any contracts arising will be direct between householder and installer.

SUMMARY:An Autumn Elegy
DESCRIPTION:University Music’s Orchestra and Choirs present An Autumn Elegy at 7.30pm on Saturday 29th October in Christchurch Priory. The programme includes Rutter’s Requiem\, Chilcott’s Canticles of Light and\, in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth\, Vaughan Williams ever popular The Lark Ascending. Our violinist soloist will be Nivedita Sarnath who\, having studied at the Royal Academy of Music\, The Boston Conservatory and Harvard University\, is now a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Our soprano soloist will be Verity Joy who is a current undergraduate student at Arts University Bournemouth. Please join us for what promises to be a fantastic evening of music in the wonderful surroundings of the Priory.
