SUMMARY:Vanity Fair by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s acting and technical cohort present a thrilling and nostalgic production Thackeray’s hilarious satire\, ‘Vanity Fair’. \nSet in the early 1980s New Romantics scene of London\, follow wannabe ‘It Girl’ Becky Sharp and her sweet-natured friend\, Amelia Sedley\, as they scale the heady heights of society and hustle through the hazardous playground for the rich and beautiful. \nOpened in 1946 by Laurence Olivier\, the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School has grown a reputation for attracting the very best in young acting talent and\, as such\, has some notable alumni to its name including Daniel Day Lewis\, Greta Scacchi\, Peter O’Toole\, Olivia Colman and many more. The School’s annual visit to Dorset has always been a firm favourite on the Artsreach programme and we are delighted to welcome them back this summer for the first time since 2019!

SUMMARY:Local Author Sheena Dearness Book Launch ‘Shadows’ & Signing
DESCRIPTION:Have you read ‘A Red Haze’ – the first of my Dorset-based trilogy starting in the 1946 post-war period? In the book\, fourteen and a half year old Meg Taylor faces circumstances far beyond her control that forces her into an environment where her future appears to be mapped out for her. Her new life is not without dangers as the crimes of others impinge on her life. \nIn ‘Shadows’ Meg returns to her birthplace near Sturminster Newton to face the unpleasantness of her past. There\, a dark shadow threatens the loss of her daughter Issy. On returning to Wool\, shadows of past criminal activities places the family in grave danger. \nAuthor’s note: ‘ Meg believed women of that era were locked into societal traditions that demanded a woman’s role was to marry and have children while men were in the workplace. Her hurt\, anger and frustrations will touch you but so will Meg’s stoicism and determination. ‘Me Too’ and the empowerment of women would gain from reading the two books.’ \nBoth books will be available at my book launch of ‘Shadows’ in the Grosvenor Arms\, High Street\, Shaftesbury SP7 8JA on Thursday 23rd June at 10am. \nNote: There is no charge but 10% of sales of the books on the day will go to ukraine-funds@fpc.org.pl who supply books to Ukrainian refugee children and funds to Ukrainian publishers to print books for the exiled Ukrainians in other countries.

SUMMARY:William Barnes\, Robert Young\, and the Spirit of Stur
DESCRIPTION:“William Barnes\, Robert Young and the Spirit of Stur”\nDavid Fox shares insights into the past of the town and Vale life as depicted in the poetry and writings of William Barnes (1801-86) and Robert Young (1811-1908). Both were Sturminster-born and David puts this into the context of local history. Young witnessed local celebrations of victory at Waterloo\, the arrival of the railway in 1863 and lived to see a motor car. Barnes’ poetry of Blackmore Vale life saw him receive visits from the likes of Tennyson\, and he was mentor to the young Thomas Hardy.\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/william-barnes-robert-young-and-the-spirit-of-stur-tickets-300547464557

SUMMARY:Great Expectations by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School
DESCRIPTION:From humble beginnings in the marshlands of Kent\, young Pip is determined to make strides in the big city and get a leg-up in society. Pip is quickly caught up in a world of compelling characters – the elderly jilted bride Miss Haversham\, the criminal Magwitch and alluring Estella. Can our ambitious protagonist realise his dreams or will life inevitably present itself with obstacles and trickery? \nAbounding in trademark Dickensian humour\, this wry coming-of-age story has been a landmark of English Literature since its publication in 1861 and continues to charm readers to this day. \nTeeming with eccentricity\, fearsome convicts\, stopped clocks\, decay and decadence\, Jo Clifford’s adaptation breathes new life into this beloved tale\, and vividly is brought to the stage by director Jenny Stephens and students from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

SUMMARY:Literary Lunch with Christopher Nicholson at Crown Inn\, Marnhull
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Nicholson is the author of several highly-praised works of fiction\, including ‘The Elephant Keeper’\, which was short-listed for the Costa Novel Prize\, and ‘Winter’\, a study of Thomas Hardy in old age. ‘Winter’ was described by the Times as ‘pitch-perfect….shrouded in ice\, fog and the dark shadows of the trees that tower over Max Gate\,’ and by the Guardian as ‘a superfine\, thistledown novel about a novelist\, a place and about love and loss’. David Lodge called it ‘a wonderful novel\, moving\, gripping and illuminating.’ In this talk Nicholson will be investigating the strange story of Hardy’s association with one of the rarest of all British birds\, the cream-coloured courser.\nThe ticket price includes a set two-course lunch at the Crown Inn\, Marnhull. The Crown is famous for its association with Tess of the D’Urbervilles.\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/literary-lunch-with-christopher-nicholson-at-crown-inn-marnhull-tickets-300468989837
