SUMMARY:Summer Season of Plays
DESCRIPTION:A second Summer Season of Plays\, bringing rep theatre to the beautiful Marine Theatre\, on the sea front at stunning Lyme Regis\, again. Following the successful performances last year\, this year we bring you five popular plays from 23rd July to 27th August. For five weeks\, you can enjoy a company of professional actors bringing you popular plays\, each one a great evening’s entertainment. Get a season ticket for all five plays for £75 and save money\, plus members of the Marine Theatre get a 10% discount. \nThe first show is Ira Levin’s ‘Deathtrap’\, a murderously funny thriller made into a film with Michael Caine. With multiple plot twists\, this fiendishly funny play spirals into a deadly game of deception and betrayal. \nNext is Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘A Brief History of Women’\, a hilarious and gently touching comedy played out over 60 years. A tragi-comedy with all of Ayckbourn’s trademark theatricality\, this will be performed in-the-round. \nThe third play is ‘Strictly Murder’ by Brian Clemens\, a dark and frightening thriller set just before WWII. Lies\, subterfuge and murder make this fast-moving play a dark and disturbing roller coaster of bluff and double bluff. \nThen\, for her 250th year\, we present Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’\, adapted by Mark Healy\, which is set partly in Lyme Regis\, on the famous Cobb. This faithful yet inventive telling of the story blends Jane’s own life with that of her heroine\, Anne. \nThe season finishes with Noël Coward’s sublime comedy of manners ‘Fallen Angels’ which is a champagne cocktail of wit and charm\, described by the Lord Chamberlain as a ‘farcical comedy’ when it was first performed. \nAll plays start at 7.30pm and change midweek\, so if you’re in Lyme for a week you can see two plays. Weekend performances vary – see website for details\, or call in at the Lyme Regis Bookshop or Bridport Tourist Information Centre. \nDo come and join us!

SUMMARY:Moments
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating over 13 years of working together\, the critically acclaimed team behind the making of international hits The Nature of Forgetting and BIRTH opens up their precious notebooks and share how their magic works. By doing so the magic seems more impressive\, more real and more magical. SUMMARY:Coming to England
DESCRIPTION:The UK tour of the stage adaptation of Floella Benjamin’s much-loved book\, Coming to England\, will head to Lighthouse Pool in February 2025. \n\nThis vibrant and energetic new play with music from Nicoll Entertainment and MAST Mayflower Studios tells Floella’s personal story of moving to England in the 1960s at the age of 10. Coming to England is an inspiring tale about determination and perseverance from which hope and triumph emerge during the Windrush Generation and is being adapted for the stage by David Wood OBE\, one of the country’s leading writers and directors of plays and musicals for children.\n\nAt the age of just 10\, Floella and her siblings left Trinidad and sailed alone to join their parents in England. But Floella’s excitement for her new life is short-lived\, with her family subjected to racism and intolerance in 1960s London. Guided by her mother\, and working twice as hard as her classmates\, Coming to England tells the story of how a young Floella overcame adversity and grew to become Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham.\n\nAges: 7+\nNotes: This production includes strong language and historically accurate racially abusive language

SUMMARY:Milborne Port Opera presents "The Drowsy Chaperone"
DESCRIPTION:MPO leaps into another hit musical – The drowsy Chaperone\, by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison\, directed by Karen Pankhurst.\nLast year MPO proved they could do big musical numbers extremely well. MPO’s next production\, to be performed after Easter in 2024\, is a hit Broadway musical THE DROWSY CHAPERONE\, which carried off 5 Tonys in New York and was nominated for several awards in London and the USA\nIt’s a very funny send up of 1920s Hollywood musicals\, with an implausible plot\, even more implausible characters\, and some great music and dancing from the Jazz age.\nThe entire show is set in the apartment of a slightly sad musical theatre fan who decides to play his favourite LP (the show!) and behold\, it comes to life before his eyes in his own living room.\nThe story concerns a wedding. The Drowsy Chaperone of the title (“Drowsy” is an American euphemism for drunk) has the job of keeping the bride\, a Broadway star who is giving up fame and the footlights to get married\, away from her bridegroom\, an oil heir\, on their wedding day. Needless to say\, she fails.\nThe star’s producer\, one Mr Feldzieg (no relation to the famous Zeigfeld!) is hell bent on preventing the wedding\, as he will be bankrupted following the loss of his biggest star. Several jovial gangsters\, disguised as pastry chefs\, are also trying to frustrate the match. They work for an anonymous third party who has invested a lot of money in the show. They intend to punish Feldzeig if he fails.\nThe plot is further enlivened by the antics of the groom’s Best man\, George (played by a girl)\, a latin lothario\, Adolpho and a wanabee Broadway star\, Kitty.\nMost of the MPO regulars are in the show\, along with some talented newcomers. They are being worked hard by director Karen Pankhurst. This is her second show. She directed last years’ highly enjoyable “Everything Goes” and has featured in several successful MPO productions.

SUMMARY:Ways Of Seeing
DESCRIPTION:What do you see when you enter a museum? But what don’t you see and whose voices might you hear? \n‘Ways of Seeing’ will reflect stories behind two of the Museum’s objects suggested by Museum staff: the fragmented Roman fresco from the excavated Tarrant Hinton villa\, depicting the myth of Narcissus and Echo\, and the Victorian camera\, used by Job Pottle (19th century) and Jimmy James (20th century) in their Eastbrook Photographic studio to capture images in Wimborne Town Centre. \n‘Ways of Seeing’ is a joint production by Wimborne Community Theatre (WCT) and Millstream Theatre who perform original\, site-specific theatre\, bringing to life East Dorset stories often hidden or overlooked\, in a way\, that brings together past\, present and future – rather like Museum of East Dorset does!
