SUMMARY:Fungi foray
DESCRIPTION:ed by expert Andy Knott\, we’ll explore a variety of habitats as we search for the many species of fungi on the farm. Andy will help identify what we find and have plenty of fascinating facts to share along the way. \nPart of the excitement of a fungi foray is the anticipation of finding some unusual\, and at a similar event last year we discovered some nationally rare fungi species including Lacquered Bracket (Ganoderma lucidum)\, Medusa Mushroom (Agaricus bohusii)\, Oak Bracket Fungus (Pseudoinonotus dryadeus) and Wrinkled Peach Mushroom (Rhodotus palmatus). \nAdults £10  |  Children £3\nCRT Friends & Volunteers £5 \n12th October Fungi foray at Bere Marsh Farm (thecrt.co.uk) \n

SUMMARY:Israel/Palestine a Talk by an Observer
DESCRIPTION:Israel Palestine \n  \nAs the tragedy between Israel and Palestine continues Wincanton Quakers are hosting a talk by an observer who has just returned from the West Bank. \nSince 2002 the Quakers have managed a programme called Ecumenical Accompaniers (EAPPI) on behalf of the World Council of Churches. It has meant that over 1\,500 people from 22 countries have spent time living amongst the people of the West Bank\, the Jordan Valley and East Jerusalem. \nEAPPI is non-violent and non-partisan. It uses the internationally recognised role of accompaniment as a framework\, provides a protective presence and reports widely to raise awareness of human rights violations. \nThe Very Reverend Nicholas Papadopulos\, Dean of Salisbury has just returned from observing the situation and will be speaking at The Balsam Centre\, Wincanton at 7.0 pm on Monday 15th July. It is an open meeting and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Running on Empty. Guy Deacon in Conversation with Jenny Devitt
DESCRIPTION:Aged 60 and having lived with Parkinson’s disease for over 10 years\, Guy Deacon CBE set out for one last adventure\, to drive solo from his home in the UK to South Africa. This incredible journey\, crossing Europe and the full length of Africa\, would take the former army officer and father of two over 12 months\, 18\,000 miles\, 25 countries\, 9 breakdowns\, an emergency evacuation and 3650 prescription pills.\nQuite simply an incredible feat for a man travelling alone with Stage 3 Parkinson’s. \nWith very little use of his hands\, poor spatial awareness\, and often appearing drunk to those who do not understand the disease\, Guy would drive\, live and sleep in his VW Transporter for 12 months\, often camping in the jungle and remote spots hundreds of miles from the nearest village or town.\nNavigating himself through cities and towns without knowing the language\, Guy would often get lost and ask for local directions after taking a wrong turn when network coverage killed his GPS or when the roads weren’t marked on the map. Not only would the journey be fulfilling a childhood dream to drive across Africa\, but Guy’s mission was also to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease\, which is heavily stigmatised in Africa\, where it is often linked to witchcraft and black magic\, leaving sufferers ostracised by their communities.

SUMMARY:The Long Arc with Robin Walter
DESCRIPTION:In The Long Arc\, Robin Walter reads a collection of nature and environmental-themed poems accompanied by music and imagery. \n‘The Long Arc’ consists of 3 pieces of writing on environmental themes\, accompanied by recorded music and visual images.\n‘Arbor Vitae’ is a poetic version of Robin’s book ‘Living With Trees’\, with images by Juliet Wimhurst.\n‘Cleave’ is a collection of poems that trace our estrangement from nature\, our enslavement to the treadmill of ‘progress’\, and how we might address this.\n‘Invocation’ is an invitation to the four elements\, in their benign forms\, to come to us and enrich our lives\, set to the famous music of Barber’s Adagio. \nRobin Walter is a forester and writer living in Dorset. His tree work over the last 30 years has included climbing\, felling\, management and consultancy. His publications include Living With Trees (Little Toller 2020) and a poetic version of the book published in Evolving The Forest (art.earth 2020). These explore our relationship with trees as a portal to the wider natural world. His poems have been included in Tears in the Fence journal.

SUMMARY:42. The Wildly Improbable Ideas of Douglas Adams
DESCRIPTION:42\, The Wildly Improbable Ideas of Douglas Adams (Unbound 2023) is a lavishly illustrated coffee-table book which trawls through the personal papers\, drafts\, scripts\, notebooks and diaries of the much-missed humorous author (and later tech guru) Douglas Adams\, who died aged just 49\, in 2001. A famous procrastinator\, Adams regularly berated himself within the body of his draft manuscripts for not remembering an idea or for not getting to grips with his complex plots and hilarious characters. The book covers his life\, from cradle to grave\, including his time living in Stalbridge\, Dorset\, his years at Cambridge Footlights and at the BBC. \nDouglas Adams lived at Stalbridge\, where he wrote much of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy. He died in 2001 at the age of just 49. Kevin J Davies worked with Douglas Adams and will be at Sturminster Newton Literary Festival to talk about how he used personal papers and documents to create 42. The Wildly Improbable Ideas of Douglas Adams.

SUMMARY:Discovering bats
DESCRIPTION:Let’s see how many bat species we can discover on this exciting bat walk at Bere Marsh Farm. \nLed by guest expert Mariko Whyte from the Dorset Bat Group\, you’ll get to use heterodyne bat detectors and learn lots of fascinating facts along the way from Mariko. \nWe have been monitoring bats at Bere Marsh Farm for several years to help us better understand this intriguing species. There are 18 bat species in the UK\, and we have routinely recorded 7 of these at Bere Marsh Farm to date. Advances in technology in recent times have made it easier for us to learn about these fascinating and secretive creatures of the night. \nOur walk takes place from 8pm-10pm\, an ideal time to see and hear bat activity. We will explore a variety of habitats on the farm including open fields and woodland margins. Who knows\, we may encounter a bat species not previously recorded at Bere Marsh Farm before.

SUMMARY:Words\, Music and Silence - The House of Life
DESCRIPTION:This lecture recital will consider Ralph Vaughan Williams’ settings of 6 sonnets by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1904). The first of these to be composed was ‘Silent Noon’; singer Julia Hollander and pianist Peter McMullin will focus on this song\, its relationship to the rest of the cycle and especially the theme of silence. They analyse the ways Vaughan Williams’ music depicts silence\, and consider the role of Rossetti as both painter and wordsmith: calling on both our listening and our (silent) visual powers. The live performance context is an important aspect of the event\, as we witness how responsibility for noise-making passes back and forth between audience and musicians or how a pause inside a song serves the story-telling and the mood. In real time\, the performers demonstrate how silence works between one song and the next\, and its ultimate resonance at the end of the cycle.

SUMMARY:From Sturminster Newton to the White House: the Fuller Sisters in America
DESCRIPTION:A dramatic monologue performed by Rachel Alexander – as Rosalind Fuller – recounts the sisters’ three tours of America between 1911 and 1917. The drama is interspersed with the folk songs she and her sisters sang on farms\, in the high class salons of wealthy women and even the White House.\nThis piece\, written by playwright Sue Ashby\, is based on Rosalind Fuller’s memoir ‘Kissing the Joy’. Rachael Alexander is joined by Rachel Revell & Lina Felsa to perform some of the songs they sang on their tours.\nThe Fuller family lived in Bridge Street\, Sturminster Newton before and during the First World War.\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/from-sturminster-newton-to-the-white-house-the-fuller-sisters-in-america-tickets-592672107227

SUMMARY:Adorned by Nature talk by Wolfgang Grulke
DESCRIPTION:At the evenings gets colder\, Oborne Village Hall has invited author Wolfgang Grulke to warm us up with tales of the tropical South Pacific. Wolfgang is well known for his award-wining books on the subject of his fossil collection that has been visited by many locals. Now\, he has turned his attention to the islands of the South Pacific – specifically to the myriad of local cultures and myths\, and how these are celebrated in festivals\, using spectacular adornments – highly valued by tribal art collectors worldwide. \nTheir cultures were shaped over centuries by Chinese\, Arab and Malay traders\, European missionaries and soldiers fighting the ‘War in the Pacific’ on their lands. \n“ As my wife and I explored and dived the remote islands of the South Seas\, we would witness some of the most diverse reefs on the planet\, meet people who spoke more than 1000 languages\, and listen to tribal elders who remembered the taste of human flesh”\, explains Wolfgang\, “Normally\, when we think of jewellery\, we think of gold and precious stones\, but on these islands they do not have access to metals and precious stones\, so they have crafted the most wonderful adornments solely from the natural materials around them. My new book Adorned by Nature tells that story and our adventures in researching the book”.
