SUMMARY:Elizabeth Lammas presents: Mary Caroline Tyler\, née Southcombe
DESCRIPTION:Monday 20th April: Elizabeth Lammas presents: Mary Caroline Tyler\, née Southcombe\, a true daughter of Milborne Port who certainly did her bit to help bring the war to an end\, mentioned in Debrett’s for her achievements. Though not in uniform as her siblings were\, she ‘led a group of uniformed Wrens in Hut 7’ at Bletchley Park\, but of course could not tell anyone that for 50 years! Her husband\, Mr FL Tyler\, was a veteran of the D-Day landings.  A full and fascinating life. This is a repeat of the highly moving and engaging talk that Elizabeth and Caroline gave on 10th May 2025 as part of our VE Day Commemorations. It was so good that we are offering it again to those who missed it or for those who would like to hear it again!

SUMMARY:Ela Fitzpayne and John Forde- A Medieval Scandal from Okeford to London
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1325\, John Forde became rector of this parish and a trusted administrator on the Fitzpaine estate. Seven years later\, the Archbishop of Canterbury publicly accused Lady Ela Fitzpaine of adultery with John Forde. When she refused to perform the public penance imposed on her — including a barefoot walk through Salisbury Cathedral — he declared her excommunicated. Five years after that\, John Forde was ambushed and killed in the streets of London. A coroner’s jury recorded that Ela Fitzpaine had persuaded five men — including her brother Hugh Lovel — to carry out the attack.\nHow did events in this quiet Dorset village lead to a violent death in the heart of medieval England? Come and hear the remarkable true story that began at St Andrew’s.\n\n\nProfessor Manuel Eisner is a criminologist from the University of Cambridge. His research into Ela Fitzpayne was one of several medieval murder mysteries published in 2025 on an interactive map.\n\n\n\nTickets are now on sale for the forthcoming talk: ELA FITZPAYNE AND JOHN FORDE- A MEDIEVAL SCANDAL FROM OKEFORD TO LONDON by Professor Manuel Eisner on Friday 27 March.\n\n\nTickets include a drink on arrival and are on sale in Okeford Fitzpaine village shop or on Ticketsource . All proceeds are for the restoration of St Andrew’s Church.

SUMMARY:To Yollow Autumn Turn'd - Tim Laycock & Alastair Braidwood
DESCRIPTION:Dorset folk singer Alastair Braidwood is joined by his friend and mentor\, esteemed and respected folk musician Tim Laycock\, for an evening of words and music relating to the turning of the year towards Autumn: the harvest\, countryside ways and\, most importantly\, cider! Alastair and Tim are both actors and storytellers\, as well as musicians and singers. They are best known for their unaccompanied close-harmony singing woven into short stories. Readings\, songs\, and traditional tunes to toe-tap along to\, all from the Westcountry\, will come together to create a seasonal evening that educates as well as entertains.

SUMMARY:Death and Service – a talk by Richard Cooper-Wright
DESCRIPTION:There are more than 800 First World War graves in over 240 cemeteries and churchyards across Somerset. Each of the names on those gravestones has a story connected to it\, a story of family and of tragedy\, a story of life on the battlefield and of love on the home front. Richard will be uncovering the lives of those who are buried in and around Milborne Port\, commemorating those who gave their all more than a century ago. \nRichard has had a love for photography for more than 20 years\, building a long-lasting blog and rescuing antique photographs and cartes de visite from junk shops. A keen amateur genealogist\, he has drawn his two passions together\, researching First World War graves in the churchyards and cemeteries across the south of England. When not traipsing around muddy graveyards\, Richard has a penchant for real ale and folk music. \n \n\nAll talks take place in Church House on Bathwell Lane\, starting at 7.30pm and last for approximately an hour. We ask for a suggested donation of £2 per member & £5 per non-member.

SUMMARY:Stonehenge - we need to talk
DESCRIPTION:Stonehenge is a world-famous monument\, the greatest achievement of our prehistoric ancestors. It has been the subject of investigation and speculation for centuries and\, while science has provided some answers\, there is much that remains enigmatic. \nFollowing on from our very successful day in the Autumn\, which concentrated on Stonehenge itself\, we are now going to turn our attention to its surrounding landscape. Stonehenge is just one part (albeit the focus) of a complex of prehistoric monuments\, some of which pre-date it\, others of which demonstrate Stonehenge’s power well into the Bronze Age. This day will involve three experts who will look at the landscape through differing eyes: \nJulian Richards is an archaeologist who has studied Stonehenge and its landscapes for over 40 years\, conducting the first major survey of the Stonehenge Environs in the 1980s. Julian will examine how our understanding of the landscape has developed over the past three centuries. \nDr Mike Allen is a leading environmental archaeologist who has extensively researched the prehistoric landscape of Wessex. Mike will examine the evidence for landscape change from the post-glacial period onwards and why the environment may have determined the location for some of our most spectacular complexes of Neolithic monuments. \nLuke Winter is one of the country’s leading experimental archaeologists. Responsible for the design and build of the Neolithic houses at the Stonehenge Visitor centre\, Luke will examine the landscape from a prehistoric resource viewpoint\, examining the ways in which it provided for everyday life. \nAfter each presentation there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion and the remainder of the day will allow the opportunity to explore wider issues. This is the chance to ask all those questions about Stonehenge that you have always wanted to ask… \nThe course starts with registration at 10.00am and will finish at 4.00 pm. Tea/coffee will be provided throughout the day. Lunch is not provided and there are no shops or food outlets nearby so please bring a packed lunch. Lunchtime will give an opportunity to explore Springhead’s beautiful gardens. Please note the heating is kept low so wrap up well. \nThe course is strictly limited to 40 participants and early booking is advised. The cost per person is £40 and all proceeds will go towards supporting Springhead’s education aims. \nAdvance booking essential. \nPlease use link below to book your tickets through Ticket Source. \nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/springhead-trust/t-xmjaoky
