DESCRIPTION:Let’s see how many bat species we can discover on this exciting bat walk at Bere Marsh Farm. \nLed by guest expert Mariko Whyte from the Dorset Bat Group\, you’ll get to use heterodyne bat detectors and learn lots of fascinating facts along the way from Mariko. \nWe have been monitoring bats at Bere Marsh Farm for several years to help us better understand this intriguing species. There are 18 bat species in the UK\, and we have routinely recorded 7 of these at Bere Marsh Farm to date. Advances in technology in recent times have made it easier for us to learn about these fascinating and secretive creatures of the night. \nOur walk takes place from 8pm-10pm\, an ideal time to see and hear bat activity. We will explore a variety of habitats on the farm including open fields and woodland margins. Who knows\, we may encounter a bat species not previously recorded at Bere Marsh Farm before.

DESCRIPTION:Come and explore the power of natural colour through our workshop run by Artist\, Dyer and Grower\, Ffion Taverner. \nDuring this workshop we will explore the hidden qualities of the natural world\, working with homegrown flowers that have been dried from this year’s crops\, as well as traditional dye ingredients to create a spectrum of colour on natural fabrics. This workshop welcomes beginners looking to experiment with natural colour. \nFfion will show us how to prepare our materials for dyeing\, create dye baths\, as well as more experimental methods of transferring colour onto cloth. This will be a very playful day focusing on bringing lots of colour into your lives during the winter months. \nYou’ll be making your own ribbon lengths and a hemmed piece of silk that can be used as a gift\, wrapping cloth\, or something special just for you. We will also be creating several dyed samples on a variety of natural fibres including organic cotton\, linen\, and wool from Gutchpool Farm. \nAll materials are provided\, along with plenty of tea and coffee\, and lunch is also included. \nThe day runs from 10.00am to 4.00pm\, please arrive from 9.30am to start promptly at 10.00am.

DESCRIPTION:b-side is an internationally recognised and locally loved arts organisation that both embodies and enriches its place of origin – the Isle of Portland in Dorset. \nThis year\, b-side Festival returns for their 2022 edition\, launching 15 brand new artworks under the theme of ‘Common Lands’ which invites visitors to explore their relationship to the unique landscape of Portland. \nTaking place across four days between September 8th-11th\, Portland will host both local and international artists who will take festival-goers on an experimental tour around this distinctive part of the UK\, exploring its history through their creative visions. From abseiling down Portland’s infamous cliffsides to a one-to-one poetry workshop\, to diving into an augmented reality artwork of mythical mermaids and taking part in print and banner-making workshops\, there’s something for all the family to enjoy. \nThe festival will also culminate in The Big Portland Parade\, where attendees will be invited to a joint celebration of Portland. DESCRIPTION:Our increasingly popular Craft Fairs with Afternoon Tea at Sixpenny Handley Village Hall continue on Saturday 27 August from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. \nThere will be various arts\, crafts and homemade produce stalls\, including wood turned products\, jewellery\, bags\, cards and many more. There will also be a spinning demonstration by our resident village crafter where you can learn how to spin simply using a stick! Children and adults will also have a chance to have a go at using a spindle. \nTo accompany your pot of tea or mug of coffee\, there will be a variety of freshly made sandwiches\, scones with jam and cream (or cream and jam if you prefer!) plus an array of delicious homemade cakes. \nWe are a friendly bunch of volunteers who are running this free event for all the family to raise funds for our village hall. So\, if you’re looking for something to do for a couple of hours on 27 August why not come along and join in the fun; we look forward to welcoming you to our hall. There’s plenty of parking and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the sun will shine so that you can enjoy your tea outside. \nWe are intending to continue to run these events monthly so if you are interested in having a table at a future event\, please do get in touch.
